Wapsi Calf Tail

Classic Natural Calf Tail for Dry Flies, Streamers, Bonefish and Salmon Patterns

Wapsi Calf Tail is one of the most established natural materials in fly tying. The fibres are relatively short, slightly crinkled and moderately stiff, making them an outstanding choice for dry fly wings, parachute posts, split-wing patterns, streamers, Bonefish flies, as well as classic Salmon and Steelhead flies.

Compared to Bucktail, calf tail fibres are finer and naturally crinkled, allowing them to form cleaner, more compact wings with excellent visibility and buoyancy. Their unique structure has made Calf Tail a favourite for patterns where a controlled profile is more important than maximum bulk.

What is Wapsi Calf Tail?

Calf Tail, also known as Kip Tail, is natural hair taken from the tail of a young calf. The fibres are short to medium in length, slightly wavy and naturally resilient. Unlike deer hair, they do not flare under thread pressure, allowing fly tyers to create clean, compact wings and tails with excellent control.

Available in a wide range of natural and dyed colours, Calf Tail is equally suitable for classic trout flies, modern saltwater patterns and numerous streamer designs.

FLYFISHING.BG RECOMMENDATION

Compared with Bucktail, Calf Tail offers shorter, finer and naturally crinkled fibres that produce much cleaner and more compact wings. Compared with Calf Body Hair, the fibres are longer and stronger, making them a better choice for Wulff, Trude, parachute flies and Hair Wing streamers. Whenever you need a highly visible, buoyant wing that maintains a neat profile, Calf Tail remains one of the finest natural materials available.

Classic Applications of Wapsi Calf Tail

Calf Tail has traditionally been used for the wings of Royal Wulff, White Wulff, Trude and Parachute flies, as well as Bonefish patterns, Hair Wing streamers and numerous classic Salmon and Steelhead flies. Its natural buoyancy and slightly crinkled texture continue to make it a favourite material for both traditional and modern fly designs.
