JMC Snowshoe Hare

Premium Snowshoe Hare Foot for Dry Flies, Emergers and Highly Buoyant Wings

JMC Snowshoe Hare is a natural Snowshoe Hare foot (Lepus americanus)—one of the most respected natural materials for tying dry flies and emergers. The long fibres found between the toes are naturally water-repellent, resilient and highly buoyant, allowing flies to float exceptionally well even after repeated casts and multiple fish. This unique combination has made Snowshoe Hare a favourite among dry fly specialists for decades.

The material became famous through Fran Betters' legendary The Usual, but today it is widely used for Klinkhamer Emerger, Comparadun, Mayfly imitations, Caddis patterns and numerous modern dry flies. Thanks to its excellent visibility, durability and flotation, Snowshoe Hare remains one of the finest natural wing materials available.

What is JMC Snowshoe Hare?

JMC Snowshoe Hare consists of a complete natural Snowshoe Hare foot. The most valuable fibres grow between the toes, where they contain natural oils and microscopic air pockets that provide excellent buoyancy while readily accepting floatant when needed. The soft underfur can also be removed and used as a superb natural dubbing for dry flies and emergers.

Unlike many traditional wing materials, Snowshoe Hare keeps its shape remarkably well after catching fish and can be cleaned and dried quickly, making it an excellent choice for anglers who rely on durable, high-floating dry flies.

FLYFISHING.BG RECOMMENDATION

Compared with Calf Tail, Snowshoe Hare is noticeably softer and naturally more water-repellent, making it an outstanding choice for emergers and delicate dry flies. Calf Tail produces stiffer, more defined wings, while Snowshoe Hare creates a softer, more lifelike silhouette. This fur is usually called "Poor man's CDC" because its qualities are close to those of CDC feathers, but at the expense of them they are much more durable when fishing.

Classic Applications of JMC Snowshoe Hare

Snowshoe Hare is widely used for wings, parachute posts and natural dubbing in patterns such as The Usual, Comparadun, Klinkhamer Emerger, various Mayfly imitations and Caddis flies. Thanks to its natural buoyancy, durability and realistic appearance, it remains one of the finest natural materials for premium dry fly tying.
