JMC Deer Hair Natural

Premium Natural Deer Hair for Dry Flies, Muddler Heads and Floating Patterns

JMC Deer Hair Natural is carefully selected natural deer hair designed for tying dry flies, Muddler patterns and a wide variety of floating flies. Its chambered fibre structure provides outstanding buoyancy, while the controlled flare makes it ideal for creating compact wings, spun bodies and neatly shaped Muddler heads. The material is specifically selected for smaller dry flies and Muddlers, offering excellent control during tying.

Deer hair is one of the most versatile natural materials in fly tying. Depending on where it is harvested from the hide, it can be used for delicate dry fly wings, buoyant bodies, spun heads, terrestrial patterns and even certain streamer applications. Every experienced fly tier keeps several different types of deer hair to match specific tying techniques.

What is Deer Hair?

Natural deer hair is renowned for its unique cellular fibre structure. Rather than being completely hollow, each fibre contains thousands of microscopic air chambers that provide excellent buoyancy while allowing the hair to compress and flare under thread tension. These characteristics make deer hair indispensable for floating flies.

JMC Deer Hair Natural features relatively fine fibres that are particularly suitable for dry fly wings, compact Muddler heads and Caddis-style patterns. The fibres stack neatly, remain easy to control and provide an excellent balance between buoyancy, flare and durability.

Why Choose JMC Deer Hair Natural?

Excellent Buoyancy
The chambered fibre structure traps air, helping flies ride high on the surface.

Controlled Flare
Compresses and flares predictably, making it easy to build clean wings and compact heads.

Fine Fibre Selection
Perfect for smaller dry flies and refined Muddler patterns.

Natural Colour
Creates realistic wings and floating elements for countless classic fly patterns.

FLYFISHING.BG RECOMMENDATION

Not all deer hair is the same. JMC Deer Hair Natural is selected for dry flies and smaller Muddler patterns where controlled flare is more important than maximum volume. If your goal is to tie large spun deer hair bass bugs, a coarser deer body or belly hair would be a better choice. For Comparaduns, Deer Hair Caddis, Muddler Minnows and most traditional dry flies, however, this finer grade offers outstanding control, buoyancy and clean proportions.

Classic Fly Patterns Using Deer Hair

Natural deer hair is an essential material for countless classic flies including Comparaduns, Deer Hair Caddis, Muddler Minnows, Irresistible Adams and many terrestrial patterns. Its buoyancy, durability and controlled flare allow fly tyers to create everything from delicate upright wings to tightly packed spun heads that have remained effective for generations.

Deer fur is one of the most used materials for tying artificial flies. Necessarily, each binder should have a sufficient set of different types of fur, because they can be hollow and dense, thin and thick, different colors - both naturally different and artificially dyed. Deer fur is used for almost all elements of a fly - tails, bodies, wings, legs, heads ... It is present both in the smallest and fine dry flies and in large trout streamers. Examples include the wings of caddis (Elk Hair Caddis, Roman Moser's Balloon Caddis, Goddart & Henry Caddis), the bodies of some dry flies such as Irresistible Adams, the extended body of Ephemera Danica, the wings of Compara-Dun. It is used as dubbing, for example, with nymphs and gammarus, bodies of grasshoppers, beetles and ants, and it is very effective when their legs are made of broken fur. They make streamers like the classic Muddler Minnow, bodies of all kinds of mice, as well as the deerskin mouse and microporous Morris Mouse.

When working with the fur, it is highly recommended to use strong tying threads, as well as special scissors with a very fine serrated blade, with which cutting the excess fur becomes extremely easy because it does not slide on the blade. The term "Deer Hair" covers more than 30 species of animals from Europe and North America, as well as roe deer, elk, etc. Therefore, the variety is very large and it is complemented by the variants of the parts of the body from which the fur is taken, as well as the time of year when the fur is harvested and the way it is processed. Many books have been published about deer hair and the flies that are tied from it (For example - "Deer Hair Fly Tying Guidebook") and this is a whole universe in fly tying.
