Whiting Coq de Leon Cape

The Legendary Coq de Leon Cape for Dry Flies, Nymphs, Streamers and Countless Other Patterns

The Whiting Coq de Leon Cape is one of the most versatile and highly regarded feather products in modern fly tying. Originating from the historic Spanish Coq de Leon bloodline, this cape is prized for its glossy, exceptionally stiff and naturally mottled fibres that have become the benchmark material for dry fly tails, emergers and competition nymphs.

Beyond its famous tailing fibres, the cape offers a wide variety of feathers suitable for larger dry flies, palmer hackles, streamers, wet flies, bass bugs and saltwater patterns. This remarkable versatility makes the Coq de Leon Cape one of the most valuable feather capes on any fly-tying bench.

What is the Whiting Coq de Leon Cape?

The Whiting Coq de Leon Cape is a full rooster cape produced from genetically selected Coq de Leon birds originally imported from Spain. Since the mid-1990s, Whiting Farms has been the only commercial breeder outside Spain maintaining this authentic bloodline.

The best-known characteristic of Coq de Leon feathers is their hard, almost glass-like fibres with distinctive natural mottling. These fibres are exceptionally durable, highly resistant to water absorption and retain their shape after repeated use, making them the premium choice for tails on dry flies, emergers and modern nymph patterns.

The larger feathers found through the centre of the cape are equally valuable for tying larger dry flies, palmer hackles, caddis wings, streamer collars, streamer wings and many other creative applications. Compared to a standard Tailing Pack, a full Coq de Leon Cape offers significantly greater versatility and a much wider range of usable feather sizes.

FLYFISHING.BG RECOMMENDATION

If you tie a wide variety of fly patterns, the Coq de Leon Cape is a far better long-term investment than a standard Tailing Pack. While Tailing Packs are designed primarily for tailing material, a full cape offers substantially more feathers, a much wider size range and countless additional applications. From dry flies and Euro nymphs to streamers, wet flies, caddis patterns and saltwater flies, this is one of those premium materials you'll continue using for years.
