Saltwater fly fishing is one of my greatest passions and certainly one of the things that keep me awake very often ... The beauty of the clear water and the aggressive predators that inhabit it, the constant search for time and place, the power that they possess and show the fish after taking the streamer - all this is a magic for me that has long captivated me and won't let me go! Already at my first appearance with the fly rod on the coast of the island of Thassos in 2013 with my great friend and definitely the first saltwater mentor - the late Boyan Efremov, this passion took hold in me, more trips to Greece followed, a week of fishing in The Gulf of Mexico from where there are some good shots, a beautiful capo in Kusadasi in Turkey on a family vacation and several years of unfortunately dry streamers. Then, the first time, Boyan, watching me for three days "waving that rod" (I often quote him) with variable success - then with it I managed to catch two large squid and a pendulum about 50 cm - his words were - 'You are bassy-tough-bastard don't touch the spinning and keep only the fly". All who knew him will remember how florid he was in his speech ...

Since I really missed several years of fishing in Greece (I mean the sea, for trout I went several times) this year I promise not to make that mistake and to make a few trips in autumn and winter. A week this summer, during which we were with family and friends near Kavala, turned out to be a light preparation. For me, the main goal was to stock up on new equipment, new lures and new clothes, with the main goal not only Greece, but possibly other seas or oceans.

The first few days I tried nearby harbors late in the evening, at night and early in the morning with absolutely no success - the situation was similar with the anglers I met. Not unexpected given the time - late August, but I still had to walk around and have a look. The following days I paid attention to the nearby beach next to the villa where we were staying.

Aggressive baby-mayatiko started several at a time, and among them I caught quite a few "bones". All this was topped off with numerous attacks of roaches, of which unfortunately I was unable to catch a single one - apparently they were too small and the streamer came big for them - they just pulled it in different directions.

And a few words about the clothes I had acquired in recent months, thanks to the advice of Bojo Dyulgerov. Several shirts with 50 UV factor, lightweight fabric - 100% polyester, quick drying, with mesh inside, breathing holes, cuffs and everything else necessary - these are classic fly shirts for sea fishing. Quick dry long legged pants again with 50 sun protection factor and waterproof pocket, wide brimmed hat (Bojo said a must for certain latitudes) again with 50 UV and breather mesh. It was also mandatory because of certain animal representatives, various crustaceans and corals - neoprene socks, which I supplemented with cheap wading shoes with rubber soles. I definitely felt quite comfortable this way in the sea - I waded calmly all over the rocks and sand, deliberately fished in the hottest hours of the day and everything was fine. The only addition I will make is to put some shoe straps and replace the vest with a waterproof small rucksack, or rather two different ones depending on the length of the trip and the number of reels and lures carried.
