This photo is from the National Fly Fishing Fair in Dolna Banya in 2024. Then we were visited by the Swiss Christopher Rownes and Malik Mazbouri. Chris, most Bulgarian fly fishermen know him from the previous fair, where he made a very good casting presentation on the topic "Switch-cast - the way to open up many new water for fishing". However, only a few of us knew Malik and we knew what kind of casting master and angler he was. A leading presenter of the so-called "Italian casting style" with a special school in Switzerland for it in Dolna Banya, he explained to us extremely well what it was all about. We also saw the advantages of this style live and we were definitely speechless by some trick casts.
Tying Your Own Leaders
In addition to the casting presentation, Malik also showed us live how he ties his leaders for fishing and casting. Here in our country we definitely underestimate this part of our fly line, and it is definitely very important. He emphasized the exact leader materials with which you can tie your own leader - JMC Kamoufil and Maxima Chameleon Leader Material.
Malik's scheme for his hand-tied leaders is as follows - one piece 0.50 thick and 1.80 meters long. Next piece 0.40 thick and 90 cm long (half the previous one). Next piece 0.30 thick and 45 cm long (again half the previous one). Last piece 0.20 thick and 25 cm long (again half the previous one). All pieces are tied together with a Blood Knot.
On the thinnest (0.20), tie a tippet ring and on it the tippet itself of your choice (for example, it could be 30 cm 5x and after it 80 cm 6x).
