CDC Feathers (Cul de Canard)
CDC (Cul de Canard) feathers are a special type of feather collected from the area around the uropygial (preen) gland of waterfowl. This region is rich in natural oils, which make CDC feathers extremely light, water-repellent, and highly mobile in the water.
CDC is one of the most valuable modern fly tying materials because it combines three key properties: natural buoyancy, ultra-fine structure, and lifelike movement even in the slightest current.
Unlike traditional hackle, CDC does not rely on rigid structure. Instead, it uses microscopic fibres that trap air and create a natural, living impression of an insect in the surface film.
Key Characteristics of CDC Feathers
Extremely lightweight and naturally buoyant
Soft and highly mobile in water
Excellent performance in the surface film
Creates very realistic insect silhouettes
Ideal for delicate and subtle fly patterns
Applications in Fly Tying
CDC feathers are used in a wide variety of fly patterns:
Dry flies – wings, collars, and parachute posts
Emergers – perfect for insects in transition
Nymphs – used as legs or soft movement elements
Wet flies and soft hackle patterns
Modern hybrid patterns (CDC & dubbing, CDC loops, etc.)
One of the greatest strengths of CDC is its versatility – it can be used for both extremely simple and highly advanced fly patterns.
Working with CDC
CDC requires a delicate approach compared to traditional feathers. Best results are achieved by:
- using small amounts of material
- avoiding excessive compression during tying
- working with dry, clean fibres
After contact with water or fish slime, CDC flies lose buoyancy and often need drying and reactivation to restore performance.
Combination with Other Materials
CDC feathers are used primarily as a surface and structural element in the fly and work best in combination with materials that maintain their lightness and natural movement:
Thin fly tying threads - for delicate fixation without compressing the CDC structure
Dry fly and emerger hooks - the most common basis for CDC models
Fine dubbing materials - for building bodies in CDC emergers and dry flies
Light synthetic materials - for wings and visual accents in modern models
Surface CDC floatants - to maintain buoyancy in the surface film
CDC is rarely combined with heavy or bulky materials, as its effectiveness comes from lightness, air and natural movement in the surface layer of the water. An exception is their use in nymph hackles, which very successfully imitate legs with their good play.
