What is Squirrel Tail?
Squirrel Tail is one of the traditional natural materials in fly tying. It combines relatively straight guard hairs with a small amount of soft underfur, making it exceptionally versatile for tying wings, tails and streamer profiles. The underfur can also be removed and blended into excellent natural dubbing for nymphs and wet flies.
Compared to Bucktail, squirrel fibres are finer and more flexible, producing livelier movement in the water while still retaining their shape. The naturally mottled colouration adds depth and realism without requiring additional materials.
