What is Fitch Tail?
Fitch Tail is a traditional fly tying material obtained from the tail of the European polecat. It has been used for decades in classic fly tying thanks to its combination of fine texture, natural colour variation and excellent durability.
Compared to bucktail, Fitch Tail is finer and more supple, allowing wings and tails to move more freely while maintaining excellent shape. The natural transition from the lighter base to the darker tips creates depth and realism that is difficult to achieve with synthetic materials.
The fibres absorb very little water, making them an excellent choice for elegant streamers and classic winged flies that remain easy to cast throughout the day.
The length of the tail is about 20 cm and the length of the hairs is between 2 and 4 cm.
